Surface Treatment

Generally for best performance in any job, the tool steel needs an optimal combination of properties like hardness, strength and toughness. Select the steel that best meets the critical requirements of the job, for instance a steel with higher ductility and toughness to resist chipping and cracking, then proceed to enhance its surface hardness and wear resistance with a suitable surface treatment at ASSAB’s one-stop tooling centre.

Surface treatments, like ABP, nitriding and nitrocarburising can improve surface quality while retaining the core properties of the steel. Such surface treatment provides a buffer layer to minimise heat checking and/or corrosion and erosion in many hot work applications such as die casting; to resist abrasive wear and scratch in plastic moulding; and to counter adhesive wear, galling and friction in cold work forming and blanking.
